The musicians involved admit that “Occupy the Vous” has nothing to do with the grassroots movement currently taking place on Wall Street, but like those protesters, these artists are aiming for an overhaul — one of the St. Joseph music scene.
“We kind of want to break down that genre barrier,” says Zale Bledsoe, who will perform at the event on Nov. 5. “It doesn’t matter if you play metal, country, folk, alternative or hip-hop, we want to try to show everyone that it’s one scene. We all know each other and we can all support each other.”

That’s why “Occupy the Vous” will showcase five solo artists of varying musical tastes. Bledsoe, Marcus Words, Bret Yager, Ben Constable and Cody Hudson will perform at the event, which starts at 8 p.m. at the Rendezvous.
The best part: “Occupy the Vous” will be easy on your wallet. Not only is admission to the event free, but the guys are providing a free keg that will be served from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Consider it their display of fan appreciation.

“We’re just giving back to the people who go watch music,” Bledsoe says. “Plus, free beer gets people excited. It’s kind of like a house party.”

The five men hope to turn this first “Occupy” event into a monthly occurrence that will be held on Thursday nights at various venues around St. Joe. Although they might not be able to spot a free keg each month, a number of other musicians already have shown interest in being a part of the “Occupy” series in the future. The spirit of the series is to mix several musical genres while pairing some of St. Joe’s better-known musicians with ones that don’t have as much name recognition.
With no charge and a rotating cast of artists, “Occupy” could potentially bring newcomers to the local music scene while also introducing several fledgling acts to Joetown’s loyal music fans.

“Marcus Words is a known name here, but there are other guys worth checking out,” Yager says. “The whole idea is just to bring notice to all of the artists.”

Yager will perform his own unique blend of rock, reggae and hip-hop at “Occupy the Vous.” Yager says his sound has been largely influenced by artists like Sublime, Slightly Stoopid and Everlast.“It’s not too hip-hop, but if you’re like a Queens of the Stone Age or Metallica fan, I’m a rapper,” Yager laughs.

Ben Constable will throw in some punk rock inspired by bands like Rancid and Dropkick Murphys, while Lets Talk bassist Cody Hudson will play some eclectic indie rock numbers.

Bledsoe says Marcus Words has been working on some new songs, but those who attend “Occupy the Vous” can expect a few of the soulful, groovy jams that have made him such a force in the local music scene. Bledsoe says his set will consist of new acoustic tunes, songs from Dsoedean (the rock band he fronts along with Words, Bobby Floyd and Colby Walter) and maybe even a few from his old solo project, For the Sound, which dabbled in indie folk in the vein of Bright Eyes.
“We’re all doing something a little different,” Bledsoe says.

Yager, Words and Constable each will perform two 20-minute sets, while Bledsoe and Hudson each will perform one. Yager says they’re hoping the short sets keep it fresh and maintain everyone’s interest in the music. Most importantly, Yager, Bledsoe, Words, Hudson and Constable want to immerse a young, new crowd into the St. Joseph music scene.
“Whether you’re a hipster or a punk rocker, you need to support those guys,” Yager says. “If you let live music die, what else do we have?”

The idea behind these events is to bring attention to the amazing musicians and fans we have in our city. Music and Fan appreciation shows if you will.

This show is Saturday November 5th at The Rendezvous in downtown Saint Joseph. We will be providing FREE keg beer from 8-9:30 with music starting at 9pm. The schedule of the event will be a little different than usual with each performer playing more than one set. A change of pace is always good.
